It was a loooong day. It all started with waking up at the ***crack of dawn (4:00am!!!) to make the 2.5 hour flight to Ames. A nice tail wind helped with the trip up but, made it nearly a 4 hour flight back. By the time we picked the kidos up from the grandparents and made it back to the house it was 11:30pm.

Just a few pictures from the trip....

Sunrise somewhere over northeast Kansas.

K, what's it cost to fly to a game like that? I assume you don't own the plane, but maybe you do. But what if you rent the plane, buy the fuel (and pay for airport time??)--what does that set you back?

~$60-70/hour for a 172. Round trip yesterday was 6.5 hours. It starts to get out of reach for a 182 or 206, $90 and $110 an hour respectively. However, they are much nicer to fly than the fixed-pitch 172.

What about fuel costs--are you including that in those numbers?

And do you have to pay to land/park the plane in Ames?

And last question--what do you do when you get to, say, Ames to get to the game (taxi?).

Yes. Fuel cost are the majority of the cost to fly. At $4.50/gallon burning 10 gallons/hour will cost $45/hr. No pay-to-park at Ames. Most small airports don't charge a "tie-down" fee but some places can be as much as $20/day. Yes, normally a taxi ride in split with other Sooner flyers.

My cost our not even close to what the average students are paying. Most places that rent to students charge $110/hr for the plane and another $35/hr for the instructor.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I don't ever plan to take flying lessons, but I think there's something very cool about being able to fly yourself places like that.
