...and I use the term "firemen" deliberately because I refuse to kowtow to the nattering nabobs of PC'ism who insist all English nouns and pronouns must be gender neutral. Therefore, I generally eschew the term "firefighter." Besides, do you really want some chickie to attempt throwing you over her shoulder to carry you out of a raging inferno?...but I digress.

When I was a little spud at Northwest Elementary in Ard Vegas, an engine company of the AFD used to show up every Ocober for "Fire Safety Week." It was waaaay cool.

We got to see the bunker gear, the truck and listen to firemen talk about how to "drop, cover and roll" if we ever happened to ignite, and how to drop to the floor and crawl out of our burning house under the smoke. They taught us about the "fire triangle," which may have been my first actual science lesson. We also had a fire drill.

They gave us cool stuff like honorary fireman badges, and red plastic fire helmets provided by The Hartford Insurance Co.

Do you guys still do that?

BTW, I wish I still had this. My grandfather gave me one at Christmas when I was about 7. He bought it at a Texaco gas station. The imbedded speaker was a fire siren. It was very cool.
