Oct. 16, 1959: A "classy ride" for the urban cowboy

1959 Chevy El Camino

48 years ago today, Chevrolet introduced the El Camino, a sedan-pickup created to compete with Ford's popular Ranchero model. Built on the full-size Chevrolet chassis, the big El Camino failed to steal the Ranchero's market and was discontinued after two years.

1954 Cadillac El Camino was the first GM vehicle to bear the moniker. It was not a car/pick-up like its Chevy predecessor. Frankly, it was more of a homage to the chestal region of wimmens. Check out the front. It wasn't offered very long.

But four years later, in 1964, the El Camino was given a second life as a derivative of the Chevelle series, a line of cars commonly termed "muscle cars." The Chevelles were stylish and powerful vehicles that reflected the youthful energy of the 1960s and early 1970s, and sold well.

The Chevelle Malibu Super Sport was the archetypal muscle car, featuring a V-8 as large as 454 cubic inches, or 7.4 liters. Chevelles came in sedans, wagons, convertibles, and hardtops, and, with the reintroduction of the El Camino in 1964, as a truck.

1972 El Camino...probably the most popular model of the El Camino ever sold by Chevy

The station wagon-based El Camino sedan-pickup had a successful run during its second manifestation as a Chevelle, and proved an attractive conveyance for urban cowboys and the horsey set. Chevy ceased production of the El Camino in 1987.

1987 El Camino...end of the line

As an aside, The titular character of "My Name Is Earl" owns a 1973 fourth generation El Camino, although it has suffered damage and now has several replacement parts, including a 1980s hood.

Jamelle Holieway had a sweet blue El Camino in the 80's. Failed the redneck test though b/c it didn't have green carpet on the bed.
