Future of NU brass up in air
By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

Sure, Dale Jensen had a few minutes to talk Nebraska football. Got a half hour?

Never mind that it was hours before his Arizona Diamondbacks were to play Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Sunday. Jensen had his Huskers on the mind.

He painfully listened to Saturday’s game, a 45-14 Husker home loss to Oklahoma State, a day Jensen considers the program’s lowest in modern history.

“At halftime, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, just don’t let this thing get into the 60s,’” Jensen said.

A Lincoln native and one-time University of Nebraska-Lincoln student, Jensen made himself worth hundreds of millions of dollars as a bank computer software mogul, big enough that he’s now part of a four-man partnership that owns the Diamondbacks.

Big enough that he’s given millions to UNL. Big enough that when he says he’s had it with that university’s athletic director and football coach, you pay attention.

“The general consensus from everybody I’ve talked to is that (Bill) Callahan and (Steve) Pederson both have to go,” Jensen said.

And if they don’t go, would he keep sending money to the athletic department?

“Right now, today, if someone came to me (asking for money) and I knew the current leadership was going to be there, probably not,” he said. “Not even probably. I get to vote with my pocketbook and that’s the only vote I have.”

I agree. Plus I don't like the idea of TO as AD at all. His decision making as a politician was iffy and his only experience with choosing a head coach was his choice of Frank Solich to replace him. Not exactly a great track record.

The think the Huskers could bring in a decent coach now that they have officially fallen off their high-horse. Nobody wanted to follow Osborne, and few wanted to follow Solich who was fired after a 9-3 season. Now that Husker fans know just how bad a program can get in such short amount of time, a decent coach would take that job and the fans should be patient.

It is amazing how Nebraska's football coaching hires are following the OU trend set in the 90's (1. Long time assistant = wins, but not enough and cut loose; 2. Quick fix, big name hire = doesn't win and alienates the program). A good hire and they could easily dominate the North on an annual basis.

Octavian
10/15/2007, 01:28 PM
I dunno about Nebraska...that search will be interesting. The right hire is crucial for the Corn now to avoid falling into a permanent has-been status. That's an abyss that could be hard to get out of....we got lucky with Bob.

got this email from huskerpedia this a.m.

You have received this email because you have registered in the past for the HuskerPedia BBS. With the recent "situation" with the football team, traffic on the bulletin board has increased dramatically. :D On Game Day Saturday we had almost 1200 people on the board at one time, and on Sundy night we set a new all-time record with 1,684 simultaneous users putting a heavy load on the server. In order to preserve access for the registered members that directly support this BBS, we have had to shut off access to "lurkers" - including registered users that have not purchased a PediaCard in order to post messages on the board.

During heavy traffic times, game days, letter of intent signing day, etc. we may need to limit access by limiting access by groups, where the priority will be:

1. Registered users that have purchased a PediaCard and have posting privileges on the BBS.
2. Registered users that have not purchased a PediaCard.
3. Lurkers that have not registered.

If you have received this email you are in the second category. If you want to avoid being denied access during heavy traffic times on the board you have two choices:

1. BEST CHOICE! Buy a PediaCard - here's the link.

http://www.huskerpedia.com/bbs/

2. Reply to this email with a simple "yes" response and you will be placed in a priorty group according to your original registration date and how quickly you respond to this email.

IF YOU DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL YOU WILL BE PLACED IN THE THIRD CATEGORY.

Buy a PediaCard and you won't have to worry - you can find that information on this page:

I doesn't surprise me in the very least that SP is gone. There are too many people that care about Husker football that have the money and power to make sure this was going to happen. I fully expect our D coordinator to be gone sometime this week as well. I will, however, be suprised if Cally is gone before the end of the season. I imagine that with the contract extention that he signed this year (another one of SP's fabulous ideas! ) they will give him till the end of the year to turn the team around and show that things can change for the better once Coz is gone.

In the end I feel really bad for our boys. This season has been killing them and it's been pretty obvious over the last few games that they have given up hope and given up on the coaches. Hmmm maybe they will fire Cally now afterall. :O

Well, here’s one big donor who isn’t happy about the ax given to Steve Pederson.

Dan Cook said the University of Nebraska-Lincoln isn’t going to get another cent from him.

The 72-year-old’s family name adorns the Cook Pavilion practice field on campus.

He was infuriated about Monday's dismissal of Pederson.

“I know 99 percent of people are just elated,” Cook said. “I wish Nebraska nothing but the best. But they ain’t going to have me around. Upon reflection, this is not the best analogy. It's not like TT and Nebraska are giving up football in order to concentrate on women's rugby...so to speak.

Okay, so getting torched by oSu is more like...waking up in an alley 100 miles from where you live while lying in a puddle of your own (?) vomit with your pants down to you knees with no recollection of the past five days and deciding that it's time to check yourself into rehab.

They could go 1-11 with a lone victory over OU (sometimes in another sport) and close the ol' shack down for a week.

The job description of a University's Athletic Director doesn't just include the Football program, correct?

I know I'm just an old broad who's a fan, not hugely knowledgeable about the inner workings of college football...but why can an A.D. over the dumb** machinations of a failing football coach? Fire the coach's sorry six at the end of the season.

Because football is sport number one at Nebraska, and Pederson came in only to fire a coach who just went 9-3 and hire another that changed how football at Nebraska was played completely and do much, much, worse than his two vaunted predecessors.

Also, if Callahan were the one fired (unlikely, since Pederson's reputation was banked on him), then Pederson couldn't really be trusted to hire anyone better.

Callahan will get the boot at the end of the season, and a new AD will be appointed to head the search for a new coach.

The whole athletic program had troubles, and Pederson tied his career to the success of Slashan. No success for Cally, no career for Pederson.

Pelini is completely overrated.
1) NU's 2003 D simply was not as good as revisionist Husker historians are remembering it. His D shut down 9 teams, only one of which finished the season with a winning record (OSU). Mizzou, Texas, and Kansas State lit up his defense for 452, 484, and 561 yards respectively. This was NOT a dominant defense, although it would be a step up from the pathetic joke that the "Blackshirts" have become.
2) I think we all remember what happened to the OU secondary in the 2004 NCG.
3) LSU's defense is great, but not because of Bo Pelini; LSU's defense was great long before he arrived.

No, but at Nebraska, the football program is the prime property. It may only be one sport, but it's by far the most important sport, and it generates by far the most revenue.

You may have more than one goose, but if all else fails, you better damn well make sure the golden one is in good shape.

I know I'm just an old broad who's a fan, not hugely knowledgeable about the inner workings of college football...but why can an A.D. over the dumb** machinations of a failing football coach? Fire the coach's sorry six at the end of the season.

The problem is that the AD is responsible for Callahan. He fired Solich after a 9-3 season -- which, by the way, what message does that send to prospective candidates -- had to publicly settle for his... what, fourth or fifth coaching choice? That's embarrassing, and it stinks of incompetence.

He insisted that the team run a West Coast offense immediately when the team wasn't recruited well for it -- in essence assuring performance problems until the recruiting pipeline caught up. I mean, what's wrong with using what works for the players you have, then recruiting for the system you want to transition to going forward? Again, incompetence.

Also, Callahan was a poor personality fit. Callahan's personality clashes with the Nebraska fanbase's behavioral expectations. They might have overlooked his faults if he won, but he didn't. (This is a polite way of saying Callahan is a ****ing *********, and it's embarrassing to have such a boorish turd representing you, especially after you got used to a class act like Osborne.)

And finally, most importantly, the AD stood by Callahan in the face of all these forces. While I suppose on one level, loyalty is admirable, if the AD is unwilling to ****can the non-performing coach, your recourse is to replace him with someone who will.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21324733/

WACO, Texas - An assistant football coach at Baylor was suspended Tuesday after he was cited for urinating on the bar at a tavern.

Eric Schnupp, Baylor’s offensive line-tight ends coach, was not arrested but issued a citation early Sunday for disorderly conduct-reckless exposure at Scruffy Murphy’s, police said. The citation is a Class C misdemeanor carrying a $258 fine, according to Waco Municipal Court.

Coach Guy Morriss announced the indefinite suspension during his weekly news conference without elaborating.

Bartender Danny Severe said an employee saw Schnupp urinating on the bar, and a manager told police officers who were there on an unrelated matter, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported Tuesday. Schnupp apparently thought no one was watching him as employees were moving patrons from the building.

The coach had traveled with the team to Lawrence, Kan., where the Bears lost to Kansas 58-10 Saturday. Schnupp, in his first year as a coach at the world’s largest Baptist university, played football for Miami (1995-00) and previously coached at West Texas A&M.
