USC beats Bama in Bama for their only loss. USC later lost themselves. OU loses to Nebraska then beats them in the Orange Bowl. Why didn't OU get a share of the title with USC? Was Bama an exception?

once bama claims a year, no one else can claim it as theirs. as a result, no one BUT bama has won a championship since 1883.

I always said that OU was the only team to beat everyteam they played that year (won the revenge match), so we should have won.
OU's storied history is littered with these examples (tied USC 7-7, but dominated stats, early season game).
But, unlike 'Bama, we only claim them when we have the trophy in the trophy case.

OR, you can pretend like you actually have four crystal footballs for older titles, like Texas! :D

Why didn't OU win a share in 1978?

The literal answer is that neither the AP or UPI voted us #1 at the conclusion of the season.

Now, the records will tell you that the Helms Athletic Foundation selected OU as its NC in that year, which is good enough for Bama and USC. But that's not good enough here, and should never be good enough.

Washington recently claimed a national championship for a year (I think 1960) when the Helms Foundation was the only one who awarded it to them. I'm glad we don't pull that crap as I've been teasing them endlessly about it.

Why is it that Texas has 2 crystal balls in their trophy building? I tried asking over in Hornfans.com some time ago and they said for me to stop being jealous. Obviously can't get an intelligent response over there.

You show me a shorthorn with 2 balls and I'll explain the meaning of the phrase "exception to the rule".
