193 years ago, on this day in 1810, Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, later King Ludwig I of Bavaria, marries Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The Bavarian royalty invited the citizens of Munich to attend the wedding reception, held on the fields in front of the city gates.

These famous public fields were named Theresienwiese--"Therese's fields"in honor of the crown princess; although locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n." Horse races in the presence of the royal family concluded the popular event, celebrated in varying forms all across Bavaria.

mmmm, two liter beer mugs

The decision to repeat the festivities and the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the annual Oktoberfest, which now begins in late September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. Alcohol consumption is an important part of the modern festival, and more than 1 million gallons of beer are consumed annually at Oktoberfest im Munchen.

The fest is massive and still conducted at Munich on the original fields. Seen here by satellite.

Fun for the whole family, the Munich Oktoberfest has all sorts of carnival-style attractions.

Sooo, this year at the big honkin' Oktoberfest in Tulsa (http://www.tulsaoktoberfest.org/), (Oktoberfest in Tulsa ist wunderbar!) or wherever you happen to celebrate it, make sure to hoist one in honor of good 'ol Ludwig & Therese of Bavaria whose nuptials were the original reason for the season.

Aerial shot of Tulsa's Oktoberfest. I freely admit I'm a Tulsa homer, but seriously, it's considered one of the Top Ten Oktoberfests on the planet. It starts next Thursday and runs thru Sunday.
