Why it's interesting:

They're doing La Boheme tonight. Season opener. Starring Angela Georghiu as the ill-fated seamstress - she's married to Roberto Alagna, the tenor who caused a stink by walking offstage during a performance at La Scala last winter and refusing to continue. His understudy had to run onstage in a t-shirt and jeans to finish the rest of the act.

So for tonight's show, not to be outdone, Angela Georghiu just got ****-canned about 3 days ago because she missed 6 of the 10 rehearsals scheduled. One of those nights she was in New York City watching her husband sing at the Met instead of being in rehearsal. So her supa-hot Cuban understudy, Elaine Alvarez, gets a HUGE chance to steal the spotlight tonight.

Oh hells yes. this dude is rawking out on one of my favorite arias. "Vecchia zimarra". He's singing goodbye to his sweet-*** coat, which he is about to sell to pay for a doctor for the dying chick.

unusual facts: Opera is the only form of the performing arts in the US that has increased its attendance percentage among 18-35 year olds.

Also: Opera in the US annually brings in a live audience roughly as big as the NFL. 22 million each.

In 2001 I went to see The Marriage of Figaro at the Kansas City Lyric Opera on Saturday night and a Chiefs game on Sunday. It was a good weekend.

yeah, but it'd be about 11 million if all the husbands didn't have to go. ;)
