My wife wants to change all of the door knobs in our house from gold/brass to silver/nickel colored. Without buying all new knobs, hinges, etc. is there any way to change their color? I thought that maybe I could just nickel plate everything but don't know how much that would be. Is there a place that you can take everything and they could dip it all in a vat to get the results that I am wanting?

more than likely anything that you do that involves plating will be more expensive than buying new hardware.

Duct tape.

Unless you have some really expensive hardware in your home already, you'd be better off just replacing it.

No just go to lowes. They sell spray paint that is metalic. It's really pretty easy to do. They do it on HGTV all the time.

Lil is right. They have some really great spray paints that will give you the look that your wife is looking for.

Is there no inexpensive place to have it all replated?

Not that I have heard of. If you can't by new its much cheaper to to spray

I second (or is that third) that. The spray paints that are available right now are amazing. Mrs. V used some kind of fancy schmancy spray paint that looks like brushed aluminum on the hardware on our bedroom suite. It's crazy.

Oh, and forget about cheap plating. No such thing.

They spray them on shows and they look great while the cameras are on.

A month later I'll bet they already start looking like crap. Certainly on any knob that gets a lot of usage.

I'd just buy new ones if you need a different color. But don't let me rain on your parade. Paint them first..........wear the paint off, and then buy new ones. That way you can double your effort and increase the price :D

Haha, that sentence sorta sounds dirty.

Yeah, but then your knob would smell like a bean fart.

Well I talked to Vic...Founder of Victoria Rice Interiors...and she say's...

the spray paint would be good if you plan on selling the house quick...but the functionality of the locks and hinges will be compromised. And will probably need replacing soon after they are painted.

Hey she's the expert:D

(at many things that's why I married her)

The wear and tear, and the oils/acids that you naturally have on your hands will start wearing the paint on any knob that gets consistent usage.

I personally wouldn't waste my time on it, but whatever.

I can't afford to do stuff like that because people expect a certain level of quality out of my workmanship and I couldn't stand behind that process with any expectation of longevity.

Anything you paint you'll have to repaint. Painting them is not a good option.

No, he's one of the otherd.

And paint on hinges will gum them up. Not good.

Mow your own lawn a couple of times and with the money you save, buy new. ;)
