LINDENWOOD 5, OKLAHOMA 2

The 8th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club suffered its first loss of the season in a game marred with 300 penalty minutes, losing 5-2 at No. 10 Lindenwood on Saturday evening.

Lindenwood struck first, scoring the only goal of the first period just over six minutes into the game to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. That lead held into the first intermission despite the Sooners having three power play chances in the first stanza. At the 2:30 mark of the second period, all heck broke loose on the ice as there was an unprecedented line brawl between the two teams. Once everything was under control, the officials tossed six players from each team, including the starting goaltenders, for fighting. After the fray, Lindenwood scored again to increase the lead to two goals. Forward Keith Denton (Vail, CO) scored on a power play to cut the Lions lead in half. However, Lindenwood scored a short-handed goal just over two minutes later to reset the two-goal cushion for the Lions. Lindenwood scored two more goals in the third period before forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) found the back of the Lions' net for OU to make it a 5-2 game. More misconducts and ejections followed in the third period, mostly on OU's side of the ledger, before time expired, ending the game as a 5-2 loss for the Sooners.

The Sooners were whistled for 164 total penalty minutes, doubling the previous team record of 82 minutes set last season against Minnesota on November 3, 2006. The Lions were assessed 136 PIMs, meaning both teams combined for a staggering 300 minutes in penalties. Before being tossed in the line brawl, Sooners starting goaltender Chad Helgason stopped 7 of the 8 shots he faced from the Lions; his replacement, Rob Mattison, stopped 12 of 16 shots and took the loss for OU. Lindenwood's Robi Cavilarri stopped all 11 shots he faced before being ejected and replaced by Grahame Lippert, who ended up stopping 21 of the 23 OU shots he faced to earn the win. Oklahoma was 1 for 13 on the power play while Lindenwood was 0 for 13 with the man advantage.

The loss drops the Sooners to 3-1-0 on the season while Lindenwood improves to 2-2-0. Oklahoma has next weekend off for the OU/Texas football weekend and next plays on October 12th at Weber State in Ogden, Utah.
