OKLAHOMA 5, LINDENWOOD 3

The 8th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club jumped out to a quick lead Friday night at No. 10 Lindenwood and it looked like smooth sailing for the Sooners early on in the contest. However, Lindenwood buckled down and tightened the game up, forcing the Sooners to hang on to a hard-fought 5-3 road win over the Lions. Lindenwood had the best scoring chance in the first ten minutes of the game as they hit the goalie's best friend, the goal post, narrowly avoiding scoring on the Sooners. Ringing the iron apparently woke up the Sooners' offense as forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) scored for OU with a goal at 17:55 in the first period. Forward Greg Curtiss (Flint, MI) followed with a goal of his own less than a minute later to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.

In the second period, Lindenwood scored in the first three minutes of the period to cut OU's lead in half. Oklahoma quickly squelched the Lions' momentum when Gebbie scored his second goal of the night less than thirty seconds later to restore OU's two goal lead at 3-1. Forward Daniel Siira (Anchorage, AK) was awarded a penalty shot when he was cut down on a breakaway opportunity and he made the most of it, scoring at 5:41 of the second period to increase OU's lead to 4-1. A few shifts after the penalty shot, Lindenwood Head Coach Derek Schaub made a change in net, replacing starting goaltender Grahame Lippert with freshman netminder Rob Cavillari for the rest of the game. Forward Jarrod Yost (Murphy, TX) welcomed Cavillari to the game with a goal with just over two minutes to go in the period to give OU a whopping 5-1 lead over the No. 10 Lions. Lindenwood scored before the period ended to make it a 5-2 game after 40 minutes of play. In the third period, the Lions scored a power play goal at the 3:09 mark to tighten the game at 5-3 and had a few more scoring chances to try to get within one of the Sooners. But the Sooners team defense prevailed, killing off two Lions' power plays and withstanding Lindenwood's offensive onslaught to hang on to a 5-3 road victory over the Top 10 Lions.

Sooners goaltender Rob Mattison stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced from the Lions. Lindenwood's Lippert stopped 10 of 14 shots before being replaced by Cavilarri, who ended up stopping 6 of the 7 OU shots he faced. The officiating was decidedly one-way Friday night with Oklahoma tagged with 8 penalties while Lindenwood was whistled for only two minors. As a result, Oklahoma was 0 for 1 on the power play while Lindenwood was 1 for 7 with the man advantage.

With the win, the Sooners improve to 3-0-0 on the season while Lindenwood drops to 1-2-0. Oklahoma stays in St. Louis to face Lindenwood again Saturday afternoon at 4 P.M.
