I find it hilarious that USC claims National Championships back from the dust bowl and before the AP Poll was in existence...Reminds me of Alabama's 42 MNCs...

By their accounts, OU has 212 National Championships and 427 Conference Championships...

1756,1811,1812,1834,...etc...1950,1955,1956,1974,1 975,1985,2000

Most of you do not know this, but OU has been winning National Championships 200 years prior to statehood...Yah I know, came as a surprise to me....

There used to be a webpage on soonersports.com or somewhere that listed all the natty titles OU could claim if it wanted to. Cant remember what the url is but it claimed like 15 or something. Good rebuttle for bammer and succ when they start pulling natty champs outta thin air.

Christopher Columbus won a national championship in 1492. I'm not sure which poll that was based on though.

Scroll 3/4s the way down.

Several universities claim more championships than are listed above (e.g., Michigan claims 11 national championships) and some claim fewer championships than are listed above (e.g., Notre Dame claims 11 national championships, Oklahoma claims 7).

We did win the Dust Bowl, but USC got the sympathy vote from the now defunct Prairie Lands Writers Guild and shared the title.

And, yet, we still don't have a playoff system!

The NCAA does not conduct a national championship in Division I-A football and is not involved in the selection process.

Since 1998, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) operated jointly by the ACC, Southeastern, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten and Pacific-10 Conferences has used a ranking system to determine the number one and number two teams at the end of the season.

Various organizations have named National Champions in college football since 1869. Utilizing the selectors as recognized by the NCAA, Oklahoma has been recognized for 16 different seasons: 2003, 2000, 1986, 1985, 1980, 1978, 1975, 1974, 1973, 1967, 1956, 1955, 1953, 1950 and 1949.

So I might be exaggerating about the 212 National Championships and 427 Conference titles, but the point I think is well taken. OU claims only the AP National Championships which have been awarded even though we could pick apart the other voting methods and can claim similar, if not twice as many as we do...For one thing, even though the BCS champion was won by LSU in 2003-2004 and the AP was awarded to USC, OU still received a National Title voting from one of the many systems...

I will stand by this next comment if we continue on the path we are on and do not get voted into the Title game, we deserve a similar result as USC received in 2003-2004...

Mark it down...To be averaging 61.5 points per game and be in the Top 5 in Total Offense, and Top 10 in Total defense does not happen because every team you play is weak...For instance, OSU's Super Bowl is against us, so they play above their expectations....Colorado has nothing to lose....Missouri has everything to gain...Texas can still make a BCS bid...Mike Leach is still Mike Leach and does not bow down because of a couple losses....Texas A&M does not want to lose despite their poor coaching woes....Baylor is playing better every year, and gave us a double overtime scare in the not so distant past....As bad as Iowa St. is, they still have a new coach that is working out bugs and could easily pull a Syracuse like one of Texas' other ex-coaches...

I am back from the tangent, but my point is, as weak as a conference is, teams/players do not, I repeat do not lay down because they might not be a National Contender, so OU still has to worry about who wants it more....

See UCLA last year against USC...Everyone will admit that UCLA is not good, and wasn’t good last year, but they still found that extra ability to make a bad season have good points...

If I were a sports writer, I would be fired because I can't collectively write on one complete thought...Take the good and bad from this and discuss....

Here's the NCAA page. We have 7 AP obviously, and I think 16 if you include the bull****ers that people like bama and USC claim.

www.cfbdatawarehouse.com but in 2004 they awarded some of the teams titles in the AP era and UPI era if they won more than 50 percent of the selectors that did not include the AP or UPI vote, such as: 1942- Ohio State is the only known champion winning the AP but UGA received other irrelevant selectors and therefore was awarded a retro title by CFBDW. They gave Notre Dame an extra one for 1953 although the only recognized champion was Maryland winning the AP and UPI. 1950 obviously was OU but Tennessee was named champion as well by that site because they received a lot of selectors; you should get the point here. CFBDW did all this prior to the start of the 2004 season. CFBDW is accurate for the most part except when they went back and awarded teams titles they did not get. The above title tally is correct based on what CFBDW had prior to their national title experimental change in 2004.

And just for sh**s and giggles, the only recognized 3peat national champion is Minnesota from 1934-1936 and a certain famous OU coach played for all 3 of those title teams.
