OKLAHOMA 9, TEXAS TECH 2

The University of Oklahoma® Hockey club spotted the visitors from Texas Tech two goals before waking up the offense and uncorking nine unanswered goals to beat the Red Raiders 9-2 in the first game of the 2007-2008 OU Hockey season. Poor judgment plagued the Sooners early as OU encountered penalty trouble in the first ten minutes of the game, giving Tech two separate 5-on-3 power play opportunities. Tech cashed in on the first 5-on-3 and scored just as another expired to go up 2-0 on the Sooners. However, Sooners defenseman Austin Miller (Dallas, TX) provided some relief when he scored from the point just 16 seconds after Tech's second goal to make it a 2-1 game.

OU apparently received some "inspiration" from Head Coach Larry Donovan during the intermission as the Sooners blistered Tech for 5 goals in the second period. Forward Greg Curtiss (Flint, MI) scored just 41 seconds into the period to tie the game. Forward Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) scored the eventual game-winner on a fluttering power play shot at the 8:54 mark. Forward Keith Denton (Vail, CO), defenseman Shawn Hayden (Allen, TX) and forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) rounded out the second period scoring for OU as the Sooners took a 6-2 lead to the dressing room at the second intermission. In the third, the well-conditioned Sooners continued to take the game to the weary Red Raiders squad. Denton scored his second goal of the game 40 seconds into the final period, Jarrod Yost (Murphy, TX) scored less than a minute later and McCauley added his second goal in the waning moments of the game to seal a 9-2 victory for OU.

Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced from the Red Raiders. Texas Tech goaltender Michael Pruneau was under siege most of the evening, stopping only 32 of 41 OU shots. Oklahoma was 4 for 9 on the power play while Texas Tech was 2 for 11 with the man advantage.

With the win, the Sooners begin the 2007-2008 season with a record of 1-0-0 while Texas Tech is 0-1-0. The two teams meet again Saturday evening in Oklahoma City at 6:30 P.M.
